Day 6

Day 6

We started are day in a classroom setting at the fuel management facility to learn more about fires and trees are the area. We went out again into the forest afterwards. This time it was a bit different we actually got to see the loggers working. I was pretty neat on how many steps they have before cutting down trees.
We meet two speakers that work at fuel management. First speaker was Bob SJolound, He first started fighting fires when he was 16 years old in 1993. He now currently the manager at fuel management facility in Warm Springs Oregon. The 2nd speaker we had was Claud Smith, he taught us what is a prescribe fire and why they are important to have. He also shared with that that prescribed fires have  been around for many years.
a prescribed fire is a controlled fire. It is meant restoration. 
We also met Ivette. She’s really inspiring her story amazing me. It really moved me. She’s in charge of the tree sales. She’s also the only female in her company. Which I find neat!
We also went to the warm spring museum where were we me some elders.

One my favorite parts on this day was being able to put a camp fire. It nice and toasty.

Day 3

Day 3. 7/08/2019 This morning my team today made breakfast, we made plain pancakes and pancakes with chocolate chips. We also had some hot cocoa/coffee. I had hot cocoa because I’m trying my best keep away from caffeine. I felt a bit sick I think it was due to all the sugar. Pancakes with chocolate chips, syrup and hot cocoa, it sounds like a sugar rush ready to happen. After we were done with breakfast we started to get ready to head to Potato Hill. The ride to our destination felt pretty long but we arrived in about twenty-five minutes or so. Potato Hill is an area in which people go and camp out on. Our assignments today were to get plants because we are going to keep record of each of the flowers by flower pressing. As were looking for plants we hiked up Potato Hill. My team went in front since were the fastest hikers. We named ourselves the Red Raccoons. This Hill was pretty steep. Day 14

Day 14 07/19/2019 Today is are last day of the trip. Many of the students woke up at 5:00am to collect sand dollars at the beach. I was certainly not one of the students. I was drained from the day at the beach.  So I decided to sleep in a bit longer. Today was a busy day. We had to clean our tents. Check in sleeping bags, water pouches, back packs and sleeping mats. We also a lot of cleaning and  inventory on food items. we packed up and started our 5 hour drive back home. This was one of the longest drives we did not this trip. During this time, I was able to reflect on the trip as a whole. I am grateful for the learning opportunity I was given on this trip. The knowledge I have gained on this trip I am able to share with the university and community members back home. I thought I really knew what was going in the world, but it wasn't until I went on this trip where I was able to really see the issues first hand. Day 12

Day 12 7/17/2018   We had our day planned out at the Klamath Tribes itinerary facility where we met Alex Gonyaw. Alex is an environmental science from Vermont but has been living in Oregon for quite some time. We talked about how dams affect ecosystems and endemic species. We also got to walk to a Link River trial to a dam site. The river here did not smell good. During this time, we also had a lunch break. We had sandwiches again... We headed back to our campsite during this time a group was making stew for dinner. We had a eldery named jeff. He spoke to us about many of the challenges that his own tribe faces. He also spoke about how he has fought to have dam taken down. By 2020 they will successfully have taken down 4 dams. He and three of local tribes had been fighting since 1993. He never gave him and I really admire him for that. It really shows what you can if you stay consistent.
