Day 1
Day 1.
07/06/2019
Everyone met on campus (Heritage University) at ten in the
morning. We all checked out tents, mattresses, and other gear related to this
trip that we may need. We took off from Heritage at about one-thirty in the
afternoon. I’m pretty familiar with White Swan, but as soon as we passed it, everything
around started to turn see a lot of green plants. Long tall trees and we drove
into a forest. I was a bit of a long drive, I ended up falling asleep and woke
up as we arrived to our campsite. At this time, it was about four in the
evening when we started to unload buses and started to build our tents. I had set
up a tent before but it had been about a year or so since I did. I needed a
little help, not to forget that I forgot to bring the stakes that came with
tents, but I was able to find some. By the time we were done setting up tents, we
started to get dinner ready. We had Spaghetti and meat with red sauce, garlic
bread and salad. After dinner, I went with Maria, Jazmin and Samuel to the
river. It was really soothing; Sadly, I feel like I haven’t seen a clear clean
river in so long. We took a few photos, sat and enjoyed the fresh air, and
returned back to campsite. It was getting
pretty dark by seven-thirty or so. We started a fire, and made s’mores. This was
one of my favorite parts. We were able to bound over Don Tahkeal’s (a Yakama
Nation Elder) stories he had about lands of the Yakama Nation. A lot of these stories moved me. I couldn’t stop
thinking about them all night. We were able to introduce ourselves to one
another as a class. It got cold over this time, so I ran over to my tent, and switched
over to a more appropriate outfit and a blanket that I brought back to the camp
fire. About nine-forty-five in the evening, everyone headed back to their
tents. It was really cold night and the tent I brought fits about 5 people, I shared
with Jazmin and Maria. We did stay up a bit passed “bedtime” and shared our first
day experiences. I’m really surprised that many of us have gotten close on just
the first day. I’m a big outdoors gal so many of the bugs, dust, outhouse don’t
bother much. When I went to bed, I was thinking to myself that I have been to
many forests, trails, campsites but nothing like this. The atmosphere felt a
little different.
